Poem #2

About two months ago I took a walk around Auburn late in the afternoon. In the past I've discovered that even going for a short walk puts my mind at ease and settles my soul, and I felt the need to do it that day. As I walked I began to sing, not a familiar song, but a new one that emerged from my current thoughts and some distant inspiration. I know this sounds lofty, but earlier I had been learning about some poor conditions that our world is in, and finding it hard to understand how to help it, this song expressed my frustration, depression, and hope.

I just sang and let the verses come to me at their proper moment. It was sung in the similar fashion of a negro spiritual, with the verse line repeated three times, the second time having the melody climb, followed by the chorus line. I didn't realize it at the time, but it's a prayer.

My Lord Repairs

In need of work this lonely world
My Lord repairs, my Lord repairs

Strengthened by his hand alone
My Lord repairs, my Lord repairs

When towers fall and kingdoms shake
My Lord repairs, my Lord repairs

My soul is weary and without rest
My Lord repairs, my Lord repairs

Justice and mercy, his tools of choice
My Lord repairs, my Lord repairs

  1. That is really cool Trey! God is not only the master builder but he also repairs what we have broken.
